The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) announced his passing on Instagram, expressing heartfelt condolences: "We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the FDCI. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal's work redefined Indian fashion, inspiring generations. His legacy of artistry and innovation will live on. Rest in peace GUDDA, you are a legend."
Fondly referred to as "Gudda" within the industry, Bal was a trailblazer whose work merged rich Indian heritage with contemporary design. His journey began in the late 1980s after earning a bachelor's degree in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, followed by fashion studies at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). In 1989, he co-founded Orchid Overseas Pvt. Ltd. with his brother, and just four years later, he launched his independent collection, quickly gaining recognition as one of India's most innovative designers.
Rohit Bal’s creations graced runways not only in India but also in global fashion capitals. His designs became a staple for numerous Bollywood stars, including Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and Sonam Kapoor. Internationally, his work attracted the attention of global icons like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, who wore his exquisite outfits, further solidifying his status in the fashion world.
Throughout his illustrious career, Bal received numerous accolades, including the Designer of the Year at the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Awards in 2001 and again in 2006 at the Indian Fashion Awards. His recognition continued with the Lakme Grand Finale Designer award in 2012, and in 2020, he was honored as the "Iconic Fashion Designer of the Country" by the Rajnigandha Pearls India Fashion Awards jury.
In October 2024, Bal made a much-anticipated return to the runway after a health scare, showcasing his collection "Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe" at the grand finale of Lakme Fashion Week.
Rohit Bal’s death marks the conclusion of an extraordinary chapter in Indian fashion. His influence extended beyond his designs; he served as a mentor and inspiration for countless budding designers. His ability to fuse tradition with modernity will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations in the fashion industry.
