Shabana Azmi Highlights the Crucial Role of Good Writing in Film

At the Screenwriters Association Awards 2024 held in Mumbai, Shabana Azmi, a distinguished actress known for her impactful roles in both mainstream and parallel cinema, underscored the vital role that writers play in the film industry. Alongside her husband, renowned writer Javed Akhtar, Azmi expressed her deep respect and understanding of the craft of writing.

 

During the event, Azmi, celebrated for her performances in films such as Ankur, Arth, Fire, and Masoom, shared her perspective on the essential nature of writing in filmmaking. "I am a daughter of a writer, daughter-in-law of a writer, and a wife of a writer. So I have great respect for writers. I believe to make a film successful it is very important to have good writing,” she remarked.

 

Azmi acknowledged the collaborative nature of filmmaking, where the director is often seen as the leader of the project. However, she emphasized that even the most talented directors can struggle without a strong script. “I know filmmaking is a collaborative process and the director is the captain of the ship. But if the script is not good, even the greatest of the directors cannot make a good film. Without a skilled writer, even the best directors struggle,” she asserted.

 

Her comments highlight the often-underappreciated role of writers in crafting compelling narratives that drive a film’s success. Azmi’s recognition of this aspect underscores the importance of honoring and celebrating writers within the industry.

 

Reflecting on the significance of the Screenwriters Association Awards, Azmi concluded, “This is why I understand the significance of these awards. As Javed Saab said, receiving recognition from your peers is the greatest award one can get.” Her statement reinforces the value of acknowledging and rewarding the contributions of writers who play a fundamental role in the cinematic world.
