Matka King’ Wraps Filming: Vijay Varma to Headline Crime Drama by Nagraj Manjule

The highly anticipated crime drama series Matka King, led by actor Vijay Varma, has officially completed filming. The actor shared the news with fans through a celebratory Instagram post, featuring a unique matka-shaped cake and the caption, “Matka King Wrapped!” The post sparked excitement among fans eagerly awaiting the series, which promises a gritty and gripping tale from a lesser-explored corner of Indian history.

 

Helmed by critically acclaimed director Nagraj Manjule, best known for Sairat and Fandry, Matka King dives into the fascinating underground world of Matka gambling—a numbers game that captured Mumbai’s imagination from the 1960s to the 1990s. Set in 1960s Bombay, the fictional series follows an ambitious cotton trader who, in his pursuit of respect and legitimacy, invents the gambling game ‘Matka.’ What starts as a personal venture quickly turns into a social phenomenon, breaking class barriers and altering the city’s power dynamics.

 

The Prime Video series boasts a compelling ensemble cast, including Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Gulshan Grover, and Siddharth Jadhav, each playing key roles in the story’s dark, complex world. With its period setting, high-stakes drama, and sharp social commentary, Matka King is poised to become one of the most talked-about series of the year.

 

Vijay Varma, riding high on his versatile performances, isn’t slowing down anytime soon. He will also be seen in the romantic drama Gustaakh Ishq (formerly Ul Jalool Ishq) opposite Fatima Sana Shaikh. Directed by Hawaizaada filmmaker Vibhu Puri, the film also features acting stalwarts Naseeruddin Shah and Sharib Hashmi, adding even more depth to the actor’s already diverse slate of projects.
