Anant Mahadevan Talks About the Crucial Role of Writing in Filmmaking

Maharashtra State Film Awards recipient Anant Mahadevan, renowned for his work as a screenwriter, actor, and director, recently shared his thoughts on the importance of a strong script in filmmaking. According to Mahadevan, the foundation of any good film lies in its plot, much like how a building is only as strong as its foundation. "There is a similarity between real estate and filmmaking. Before making anything, what does a builder search for and what does a writer search for? Plot. If the plot is right, a foundation can be made on it and if the foundation is right, a building can be built on it," Mahadevan explained. He emphasized that filmmaking is about how a writer develops and adapts a story to make it beautiful, saying, "If you don't have a story, you can't build a building."

 

Mahadevan’s belief in the importance of a strong script extends beyond just the creative process. He shared an interesting anecdote about his approach when working with producers. "Whenever I go to a producer and tell him that I have this concept, he first asks what is my first investment. I said the first investment is paying for the writer. Let him write a good script. After that, you sign me out. He will take it forward," he said. This reflects Mahadevan’s deep conviction that a solid screenplay is the most crucial step in any film's success.

 

Currently, Anant Mahadevan is busy promoting his upcoming film Phule, which he has directed. The film, based on the lives of social reformers Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao Phule, stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in the titular roles. Phule is scheduled to release on 11 April 2025. Produced by Dancing Shiva Films, Kingsmen Productions Films, and Zee Studios, the film promises to offer a compelling portrayal of these iconic figures.

 

Mahadevan’s last directorial, The Storyteller, starring Paresh Rawal and Adil Hussain, was well received and premiered at the prestigious 27th Busan International Film Festival. As he continues to work on meaningful projects that reflect his deep understanding of storytelling, Phule marks yet another milestone in his career. Fans are eagerly anticipating the film’s release, which will undoubtedly shed light on the lives and contributions of two of India’s most revered social reformers.
