Hansal Mehta, Anupam Kher, and Madhur Bhandarkar Pay Tribute to Legendary Filmmaker Shyam Benegal

The Indian film industry has lost one of its most revered and pioneering filmmakers, Shyam Benegal, who passed away on Monday at the age of 90. Benegal, a towering figure in the world of cinema, breathed his last at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, following a prolonged battle with a chronic kidney-related disease. His daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed the news, marking the end of an era for Indian cinema and the parallel cinema movement that he so profoundly shaped.

Benegal’s contribution to Indian cinema cannot be overstated. In the 1970s and 1980s, he emerged as one of the foremost figures in parallel cinema, a genre that broke away from the commercial norms of mainstream Bollywood. His films were known for their bold themes, complex characters, and social commentary, often exploring issues of identity, class, politics, and the human condition. Movies like Ankur (1974), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), and Bhumika (1977) not only revolutionized storytelling in Indian cinema but also set new standards for realism and authenticity. Benegal’s work was marked by a sense of quiet dignity, giving voice to stories and characters that were often marginalized by the commercial mainstream.

Following the news of his death, many prominent filmmakers and actors expressed their heartfelt tributes. Director Hansal Mehta shared a touching message, writing, “Go well Shyam babu. Thank you for inspiring many like me. Thank you for the cinema. Thank you for giving tough stories and flawed characters such amazing dignity. Truly among the last of our greats.” Meanwhile, Madhur Bhandarkar also expressed his sorrow, writing, “Sad to hear about the demise of the veteran filmmaker, Shyam Benegal sir, whose timeless & captivating films have inspired countless generations. His invaluable contribution to parallel cinema will be remembered eternally. .”

Anupam Kher, who had a personal connection with Benegal, remembered him fondly with a heartfelt post. He wrote, “Deeply saddened to know about the sad demise of legendary filmmaker . He was the messiah for actors, writers and technicians of alternative cinema in . He told stories differently. When I went to meet him to ask for a role during the making of Mandi, he looked at me and said, ‘I don’t have anything substantial for you in this film. And I don’t think you should do a smaller role! Why don’t you wait. Maybe something substantial will come your way!’ And when Saaransh happened he was extremely happy for me!! Goodbye . Thanks for your brilliance and generosity. Will miss you and your infectious smile.”

Shyam Benegal’s films were more than just stories—they were profound reflections of society and its evolving complexities. His work continues to inspire filmmakers, actors, and audiences alike, and his legacy as a champion of alternative and realistic cinema will live on for generations to come.

As we say goodbye to this legend, we remember his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all those who were fortunate to witness his brilliance.
