Congress leaders from Manipur seek Priyanka's support to restore peace in violence-hit state

New Delhi/Imphal, Dec 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Senior Congress leaders from Manipur on Wednesday met AICC General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi during which they held discussions with her on the ethnic strife in the northeastern state and sought her support to restore peace.

The Manipur Congress delegation led by former three-term Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh and state Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh met Priyanka Gandhi at 10 Janpath and apprised her about the prevailing situation in Manipur.

Congress sources in Imphal said that the party leaders from Manipur were given a patience hearing of half an hour by Priyanka Gandhi.

The Congress leaders from the state apprised AICC General Secretary on the ongoing turmoil in the state for the last 19 months.

The delegation also sought help from her for an immediate restoration of peace and normalcy in the state.

"The Congress leaders also thanked the Nehru-Gandhi family, particularly Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, for consistently standing with the people of Manipur at the hour of crisis," the sources said.

The Congress led INDIA bloc parties from Manipur on December 9 held a sit-in protest in Delhi demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the violence-ravaged state and resolve the 19-month-long ethnic hostilities at the earliest.

The leaders of the 10-party INDIA bloc while addressing the gathering at Jantar Mantar in the national capital claimed that both the Centre and the state government failed to resolve the ethnic crisis even as the lives of the people were devastated due to the uninterrupted violence.

The 10-party INDIA bloc submitted a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on December 6, requesting PM Modi to visit Manipur to resolve the 19-month-long ethnic conflict.

Meanwhile, around 20 civil society organisations and student bodies from Imphal Valley have announced plans to hold a rally in Delhi on December 22.
