Bhubaneswar, Dec 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) As many as 2,348 cybercrime cases have been reported in Odisha in 2023, said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in the state Assembly on Monday.
While answering a question asked by BJD leader Ranendra Pratap Swain, CM Majhi on Monday said, as many as 1,983 cases related to cybercrime were registered in the state in 2022 while the filing of cybercrime cases rose to 2,348 last year.
Meanwhile, cyber fraudsters have duped the gullible victims of over Rs 47 crore in 2023 as compared to over Rs 37 crore in 2022.
The police managed to recover Rs 1,52,59,965 while Rs 2,27,73,352 has been frozen out of the total fraud amount during 2023.
As per data shared in the assembly, 1,362 cases out of the total 2,348 cybercrime cases recorded in Odisha were related to financial fraud with crypto cases in 2023. The state recorded 1,142 cybercrime cases related to financial fraud with crypto cases during 2022.
As many as 27 cases in connection with hacking frauds were recorded in the state during the above period.
Meanwhile, the people have arrested 963 people in the state during 2022 and 2023 for their alleged involvement in various cyber crime cases.
CM Majhi while answering to another query by Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati on Monday made shocking revelations in connection with the meteoric rise in online trading fraud cases in the state during the last six years.
The state recorded only 18 cases of online fraud in 2019 which rose to 472 cases till November 30, 2024. The cases of online trading fraud increased almost 26 times during the last six years.
This apart, the number of victims increased several more times between 2019 and 2024. As many as 40,270 people fell into the trap of cyber fraudsters till November end this year while the number of victims was only 18 in 2019.
As many as 59,437 persons fell victim to cybercrime through online trading fraud between 2019 and November 2024.
