New Delhi/Guwahati, Dec 6 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah on Friday said that the grand old party will work to bring all regional forces together before the Assembly polls which will be held in 2026 in the state.
He also mentioned that Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has given a nod regarding this.
Borah was at the national capital to meet top Congress brass, and he also submitted a report to the leadership about the recent debacle in the state in the by-election.
He told reporters here: "I have submitted a detailed report on why we lost the polls in Assam. Moreover, I also had a conversation with Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders. I was advised to work for a greater opposition alliance in Assam to take on the BJP in the next assembly election."
"Congress was always in favour of opposition unity and our leader Rahul Gandhi has also advised me to work in uniting all regional parties in Assam."
Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi, the Sivasagar MLA, earlier said that an alliance with the Congress party can be formed only on the condition that the seat-sharing pact must be sealed much before the polls.
"Congress must decide on how many seats they want to fight the polls. They keep these things pending till the election dates are announced and at the last moment they give their candidates most of the seats," he said.
According to Gogoi, to oust the BJP from power, all opposition parties, including Congress, must fight unitedly. This is the only way to defeat the ruling party in the next assembly polls.”
The Sivasagar legislator also warned that the Congress party would put up a poor show if they decided to contest the Assembly polls alone.
"In the 2021 Assembly election, Congress got 26 seats but if they contest polls alone, they will hardly win 6 seats in the next polls," he said.
Congress drew a blank in the bypolls despite contesting all five seats that went to by-polls.
The opposition party lost its bastion in Samaguri assembly constituency as Congress heavyweight and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain's son Tanzil Hussain conceded defeat to BJP's Diplu Ranjan Sarmah.
