Subhash Ghai Announces Taal Screening at IFFI Goa to Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai took to his X (formerly Twitter) profile to announce a special screening of his iconic film Taal at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The screening is scheduled for November 27, 2024, at 2:15 PM at the prestigious Maquinez Theatre, followed by an interactive session with both national and international delegates at the festival. The announcement is particularly significant as Taal celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Ghai expressed his gratitude, saying, “Is a big honour for us, CONGRATULATIONS TEAM TAAL,” sharing the joyous moment with fans and industry insiders alike.

 

Released in 1999, Taal is a musical romantic drama that was co-written, edited, produced, and directed by Subhash Ghai. The film features an ensemble cast, with Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles, supported by stalwarts like Amrish Puri and Alok Nath. The film’s impact was not just felt in Bollywood but also in the international circuit, with Taal being dubbed and released in Tamil as Thaalam. It made a remarkable debut at the Chicago International Film Festival and was also an "official selection" at the 2005 Ebertfest and featured in the Celebrating Dance in Indian Cinema section at the 45th IFFI.

 

At its release, Taal became a major commercial success, both domestically and internationally. It was the first Indian film to make it to the Top 20 of Variety's box-office list. The film received widespread critical acclaim, especially for its direction, screenplay, and performances. A major highlight was the film's music, composed by the legendary A.R. Rahman, whose tracks such as "Ishq Bina" became instant hits. The film was also celebrated for its choreography, costumes, and the strong performances of its cast, with Anil Kapoor winning the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

 

Taal went on to earn 12 nominations at the 45th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Subhash Ghai), and Best Actress (Aishwarya Rai). It won six awards, cementing its place as one of the defining films of the late 1990s.
