The Piano Lesson delves into the inter-generational struggles within the Charles family, centered around a priceless heirloom—a piano that holds deep personal and cultural significance. At the heart of the story are two siblings: John David Washington plays Boy Willie, a man determined to sell the piano in order to build his family’s fortune. His sister, Danielle Deadwyler’s Berniece, is resolute in keeping the piano, believing it is the last remaining link to their family’s history and heritage. Caught between them is their uncle, Doaker (played by Samuel L. Jackson), who tries to mediate the conflict but soon realizes that the ghosts of the past are impossible to escape.
The film explores themes of identity, resilience, and the legacy of the African American experience. It highlights how the past continues to shape the present, revealing startling truths about how we define ourselves and who has the power to determine our legacies. As the siblings’ battle over the piano intensifies, so too do the echoes of the family’s history, embodied by supernatural forces and unresolved traumas.
Directed by Malcolm Washington with a screenplay by Virgil Williams and Malcolm Washington, The Piano Lesson is produced by Todd Black and Denzel Washington. With its rich dialogue, stellar performances, and timely exploration of history’s hold on the present, the film promises to be a must-watch.
Catch The Piano Lesson when it begins streaming exclusively on Netflix from November 22, 2024.
