Prime Video's Waack Girls: A Dance Revolution Begins in Kolkata

Prime Video India is all set to drop its latest original series, Waack Girls, a vibrant and high-energy show that promises to captivate audiences with its blend of dance, drama, and comedy. Created and directed by the renowned Padma Shri awardee Sooni Taraporevala, this nine-episode series is co-written by Sooni, Iyanah Bativala, and Ronny Sen. With the trailer already creating a buzz on social media, Waack Girls is gearing up to be one of the most exciting releases of November, premiering exclusively on Prime Video on November 22.

The series, set against the backdrop of the lively streets of Kolkata, introduces viewers to six young women who are determined to bring waacking—a little-known dance style in India—into the spotlight. Waacking, which is characterized by its expressive arm movements and dramatic poses, forms the heart of the story, and the series is set to highlight its significance and cultural impact. Leading the group of passionate dancers is Ishani (played by Mekhola Bose), a skilled waacker and the choreographer of the group, alongside Lopa (played by Rytasha Rathore), their spirited and scrappy manager. Together, they form the Waack Girls dance troupe, navigating personal struggles, family expectations, and societal pressures while striving for success in a city where their dance style is largely unfamiliar.

The Waack Girls cast is a mix of fresh talent and seasoned veterans, bringing an exciting energy to the screen. The series stars newcomers Mekhola Bose, Anasua Chowdhury, Rytasha Rathore, Chrisann Pereira, Priyam Saha, Ruby Sah, and Achintya Bose, with veteran actors like Barun Chanda, Lillete Dubey, and the late Nitesh Pandey adding depth to the narrative. Their performances promise to deliver both humor and heart as the characters confront challenges, forge deep friendships, and learn valuable life lessons.

Produced by Caleb Franklin, Vikesh Bhutani, and Sooni Taraporevala under the banners of Matter Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Jigri Dost Productions, Waack Girls promises a unique cultural experience. With its empowering narrative about friendship, resilience, and the power of dance, this series is set to shine a spotlight on Kolkata's burgeoning dance scene while providing an unapologetically bold platform for women in a space that often goes unnoticed.
