In a candid conversation, Vohra expressed the weight and privilege of playing Mahatma Gandhi. "I’m playing the role of Mahatma Gandhi, a figure whose name is followed by 'Mahatma' and is known as the Father of the Nation. It’s a privilege to portray such a person," Vohra begins. "To play someone who lived his life with such simplicity, who always kept the nation above himself and his own family, is truly a blessing. Gandhi ji dedicated his entire life to uniting the country, to keeping it together, even in the face of immense adversity."
When it came to preparing for the role, Vohra took a deep and personal approach. "Nikkhil Advani, the showrunner, started working on this project four years before the shoot," Vohra shares. "Even before we began filming, we were given the full script and character sketches, so the vision for Gandhi's character was very clear from the start. There was no need to look at anyone else’s performance. The requirements for the role were very specific."
Vohra’s dedication to portraying Gandhi with authenticity meant he focused not on imitating other actors' portrayals but instead on immersing himself in Gandhi's real-life footage, speeches, and interviews. "We didn’t need to look at someone else’s performance because the references were already available—Gandhi ji’s real footage, his speeches, and his interviews. All of that was easily accessible, and I could watch them on YouTube. That gave me a much clearer and more authentic idea of how to portray him," Vohra explains.
Freedom at Midnight is set to premiere on Sony Liv on November 15, 2024. The series is a historical drama that focuses on the final chapter of India’s fight for independence, covering pivotal moments such as the partition and the role of the key leaders, including Gandhi. With Nikkhil Advani serving as the showrunner, the series promises to be a gripping and emotional journey through one of India’s most transformative periods in history.
For Vohra, playing Gandhi is more than just an acting challenge—it's a profound personal experience. "It’s an honor to play such an important figure in India's history. Gandhi ji's legacy is not just about his political achievements, but about his profound influence on the way people live, think, and fight for their beliefs. I hope to do justice to his memory," he concludes.
With the premiere just around the corner, Freedom at Midnight is poised to be a significant addition to India's growing repertoire of historical dramas, and Vohra’s portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi will undoubtedly be one of its most talked-about aspects.
