MAMI Mumbai Film Festival Honors Shabana Azmi with Excellence in Cinema Award

The 2024 edition of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival marks a significant milestone by celebrating 50 glorious years of cinema with the renowned actress Shabana Azmi, who will be awarded the Excellence in Cinema Award. This accolade recognizes her outstanding journey and impressive body of work, culminating in a special screening of one of her most celebrated films, Arth.

Shabana Azmi has established herself as a formidable force in both parallel and mainstream Indian cinema. With an illustrious career that spans decades, she has garnered numerous accolades on international platforms, showcasing her remarkable ability to navigate the realms of art-house and commercial films seamlessly. As a pioneer, she is celebrated for her compelling performances that highlight the power of storytelling.

Throughout her career, Azmi has brought to life a diverse array of characters, collaborating with some of India’s most esteemed filmmakers, including Shyam Benegal, Mahesh Bhatt, Satyajit Ray, and Mira Nair, among others. Her work has not only contributed to the rich tapestry of Indian cinema but has also paved the way for future generations of actors, particularly women in film.

As a founding board member of MAMI, Azmi has been instrumental in enhancing Mumbai’s cinematic landscape, ensuring that exceptional films from around the globe reach local audiences. The award will be presented to Azmi on October 18, followed by a masterclass on October 19, where she will engage in a conversation with National Award-winning actor Vidya Balan. This session will offer audiences unique insights into Azmi’s remarkable journey and her experiences over five decades in the film industry.
