Alia Bhatt Calls for Change After Kolkata Rape Case, Highlights Alarming Statistics

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt has used her platform to address the recent tragic rape case in Kolkata, expressing profound anger and frustration over the continuing violence against women. In a powerful social media post, Bhatt highlighted the stark reality of women's safety in India, drawing attention to alarming statistics and calling for systemic change.

In her post, Bhatt wrote, “Another brutal rape. Another day of realization that women are not safe, anywhere. Another horrific atrocity to remind us that it's been over a decade since the Nirbhaya tragedy, but still nothing much has changed.”

She then shared concerning statistics to underscore the gravity of the issue: 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of nursing staff are women, placing them at heightened risk in an environment of growing violence against medical personnel. Since 2022, there has been a 4% increase in crimes against women, with over 20% involving rape and assault. Nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in India in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau report.

Bhatt's post reflected a deep sense of exasperation and urgency. She questioned how women can feel safe and go about their daily lives when such horrifying incidents are so prevalent. "This horrific incident has once again reminded us that women disproportionately bear the weight of ensuring their own safety," she wrote.

The actress emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in how society addresses violence against women. She urged authorities to focus on enhancing safety measures, creating secure environments, and addressing the root causes of such violence. “FOCUS on the safety of women. FOCUS on creating safe spaces and increase all avenues of protection. FOCUS on the why. The writing is on the wall, that there is something fundamentally wrong with the way our society currently functions,” Bhatt stated.

Her call to action was clear: “Don't tell women to change their path - change the terrain. Every woman deserves better.”

Bhatt's post resonates with a growing demand for systemic reforms and underscores the urgent need to address the deep-rooted issues contributing to violence against women.
