800 - A Diligent Biopic Tackling Identity and Triumph Over Adversities

Director - MS Sripathy

Cast - Madhur Mittal, Mahima Nambiar, King Ratnam, Nassar, Vela Ramamoorthy, Vadivukkarasi, Narain

"800," directed by MS Sripathy, takes on the monumental task of narrating the life of Sri Lankan Tamil cricketer Muthiah Muralitharan, addressing not only his illustrious career but also the challenges he faced regarding his identity and the controversial chucking allegations. While the film covers the major milestones in Murali's life with diligence, there are moments where a deeper exploration could have elevated the narrative.

The biopic begins even before Murali's birth, providing context with an animated narration of the history of cricket and its impact on the Tamils in Sri Lanka. It unfolds as a chronological account of Murali's life, from his childhood interest in cricket to the ethnic riots of 1977 that forced him into a boarding school, his debut series disappointment, the chucking controversy, and his eventual achievement of becoming the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 800 wickets.

The film keeps the audience engaged with the inherent drama in many episodes, but there are instances where a more profound examination of Murali's relationships, particularly with teammates, and the chucking controversy would have added depth to the narrative. The first half relies on a 'this happened, then this happened' approach, lacking emotional highs, leaving much to be desired for a biopic on a man who describes his life as "a rough sea."

The second half brings more edge to the storytelling, particularly in scenes portraying Murali's meeting with the leader of the Eelam separatists. The conflict of ideas between a man advocating for peace and another supporting armed struggle adds real tension to the narrative. Madhur Mittal portrays Muralitharan with conviction, allowing the audience to sense the frustration and inner conflict of a man constantly needing to prove himself.

While the on-field moments are captured matter-of-factly, the director injects drama into Murali's final test match, providing hope for dreamers and emphasizing the sporting achievements of a great talent. "800" stands as a diligent biopic that navigates Muralitharan's life, showcasing the triumphs and tribulations of a cricketer who faced challenges not only on the pitch but also in defining his identity.
