Elephant calf, separated from mother, adopted by TER

Pilibhit (UP), Oct 31 (SocialNews.XYZ) An elephant calf that got separated from her mother when the herd migrated to some other forest division, has now been adopted by the Terai Elephant Reserve (TER).

The one-and-a-half-month-old female elephant calf was rescued from Sahuwala forest range of Najibabad forest division by field forest force during routine jungle patrolling.

TER field director Lalit Verma said that the calf is now leading a cheerful life with companion jumbo Durga. She has been named Gauri, he added.

The conservator of forest of Moradabad zone, Ramesh Chandra, said that after spotting the calf, she was brought to the nearest forest post.

As she was stranded without mother for many days, she had turned very feeble and dehydrated.

She was medically examined by government veterinary officers duly trained to deal with the wildlife-related physical issues.

Under their supervision, she was given liquid feed mixed with nutritional supplements by bottle for a week.

After she regained normal health conditions, she was shifted to TER following official protocol, Chandra added.

He further said, "Durga had also been rescued from Najibabad forest division in 2018 due to separation from her mother at the age of six months. After she got home at Salukapur elephant camp, she grew and learned elephants’ natural behaviour from other jumbos kept at the camp. Durga was now playing a role as a protector for Gauri."
