DCW and police rescue woman abducted by own family for marrying by choice

New Delhi, July 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), along with Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh Police, has rescued a 22-year-old girl who had been abducted by her own family from her husband's residence in Delhi.

In June, the DCW received a complaint from a courageous young woman residing in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, who had chosen to marry a man of her own choice in May 2023, defying her family's wishes.

Fearing for her life due to the disapproval of her family, she fled to Delhi and started living with her husband there.

"The DCW promptly provided assistance to the couple, helping them lodge a complaint with the Delhi Police. However, at that time, the woman opted not to take any legal action against her family members," said a DCW official.

On July 21, the DCW received a distress call on its 181 Women Helpline from the woman's husband. He reported that some male family members of the woman had forcibly entered their Delhi home, physically assaulted her, and abducted her from there.

"Consequently, an FIR was immediately registered under sections 365, 323/34 IPC at PS Harsh Vihar, and a team from the Delhi Police was dispatched to the girl's parents' residence in Uttar Pradesh. Simultaneously, the Uttar Pradesh Police also reached the same location," said the DCW official.

"Due to the mounting pressure from the police's actions and the intervention of the authorities, the girl's family eventually left her at Gajraula police station in Uttar Pradesh, during the night. The DCW's team safely brought her back to Delhi, where she underwent a medical examination in the presence of the Commission members," said the official.

"We received a call on our 181 Helpline regarding the abduction of a 22-year-old girl by her own family. Our team acted swiftly and with the help of Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh Police, the girl was rescued within a few hours and brought to Delhi," said the DCW chief Maliwal.

"I shudder to think what may have happened with her if help had not reached her in time. We will provide all possible support to the girl. Further action should be taken against the family members so that they don’t dare to harm the girl in the future," she added.
