Africa Command (AFRICOM) Reiterates United States (U.S.) – Mozambique Security CooperationU.S. Africa Command’s (USAFRICOM) Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, Ambassador Andrew Young, visited Mozambique on April 18-19. While in Maputo, Ambassador Young who leads AFRICOM’s efforts to unite defense, diplomacy, and development to enhance stability on the continent, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, other government interlocutors, and U.S. Embassy Maputo leaders.

“I am here as part of our long-term effort to renew our shared relationship and interest to accommodate peace and security, and to support engagement between the population and civilians confronting violent extremism. Our engagement in the economic sphere is designed to help advance the growth, stability, and security of our partnership,” Ambassador Young stated at a press conference following his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Veronica Macamo.

Ambassador Andrew Young assumed duties as the Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, United States Africa Command, in July 2020. He has spent nearly 30 years in diplomatic service on four continents, including as U.S. Ambassador to Burkina Faso (2016-2020). He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at U.S. Embassy Bamako, Mali (2013-2016), and had assignments in Korea, France, New Zealand, India, and Washington.
