The High Commission of Sri Lanka in the Republic of Seychelles hosted a Diplomatic Reception on 28 February 2023 at the Savoy Resort & Spa to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Independence Day of Sri Lanka.
The event was attended by the Speaker of the National Assembly Roger Mancienne, President of the Court of Appeal Justice Anthony Fernando, Cabinet of Ministers, Principal Secretaries, Members of the Diplomatic Corp and other distinguished guests.
In his opening remarks High Commissioner Srimal Wickremasinghe emphasized that Sri Lanka has been playing a very active role in the NAM, United Nations, SAARC, BIMSTEC, and IORA and has maintained good relations with all countries.
The High Commissioner also mentioned that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1988 between the two countries, there has been impressive progress with both nations continuing to facilitate mutual assistance across areas of interest. Both nations share resources and continue to provide assistance for developing sectors that need further strengthening. The leaders of both countries have maintained dialogue and positive relations across the years, with great respect for each nation’s capabilities, natural resources, and expertise.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Sylvestre Radegonde, in his speech, stated that Sri Lanka faced an unprecedented political and economic crisis in recent history. But through their resilience, courage and determination, Sri Lankans faced the crisis and surmounted the challenges. The Minister added that Sri Lankans showed themselves equal to the task of overcoming adversity and preserving the nations unity and democratic institutions.The Minister also stated that Sri Lanka is now in the process of rebuilding and consolidating its gains of political, social and economic reforms. He added that although there are challenges, Sri Lanka is making a steady progress and will rise above challenges for the betterment and progress of the nation.
Special performances by three local artists in Seychelles entertained the guests during the rest of the event.
