TİKA created a social space at the Somali (Ummadda) National University, established in Mogadishu in 1976. As part of the Social Space Project, a cafeteria, wooden gazebos, a fountain pool, an outdoor stage, a football pitch, a basketball court, public restrooms, locker rooms, and showers were built on a land of 1,875 sq. meters at the university, which has 60 thousand students.
The opening ceremony held for the social space was attended by Prof. Hassan Omar Mahad Alle, Rector of the Somali (Ummadda) National University; Prof. Aden Guled Shabel, Vice Rector; İlhami Turus, TİKA’s Coordinator in Somalia; Abdirahman Mohamed Abdulle, Director-General of Higher Education and International Education at the Ministry of Education of Somalia; Fatma Eng. Saalihi, Private Secretary to the President of Somalia and a graduate of a university in Türkiye; Muhammed Golemi, a Student Representative at the University; and students.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Rector Mahad Alle thanked TİKA for its support.
İlhami Turus, TİKA’s Coordinator in Somalia, stated that the Agency has been active in Somalia for nearly 11 years and has carried out projects and activities that touch every aspect of life, such as education, health, agriculture, and environment.
Turus added, “We will continue to offer support and cooperation in order to improve and strengthen bilateral relations with Somalia in every field. We will top our friendly relations with concrete works and services. The firm and determined steps taken by these two sister nations towards the future will make a significant contribution to welfare and peace not only in these countries but also in Africa.”
