The Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by National Assembly Speaker Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Amos Masondo, have extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of members of the public & hospital staff who passed away in a tragic Boksburg fuel tank disaster. The Presiding Officers have also wished those injured in this senseless and ghastly tragedy a speedy recovery.
The trauma and emotional suffering that affected families are going through during this period, which was supposed to be characterised by cheerfulness and joy as believers celebrate the birth of Christ, is too harrowing to imagine. South Africans are called upon to put these families, including those injured, in their prayers during this distressing time. All efforts, particularly from state entities, must be geared towards cushioning the heavy blow on the bereaved and all affected.
The Presiding Officers commend multidisciplinary efforts, driven by departments from national and provincial spheres, non-profit organisations and other public and private entities, for immediately springing into action to assist those in distress.
“It is deeply saddening to lose loved ones at any given time. However, what makes the pain more excruciating is the tragic and reprehensible manner with which the victims have passed away. We also salute the law-enforcement agencies, rescue services, disaster management, and health practitioners who are working around the clock pertaining to this tragedy," the Presiding Officers said.
Parliament will ensure that it intervenes where it is required to do so through its oversight committees and other mechanisms permissible under the Constitution.
