ANNOTATION: The apex predator roamed the earth about 76 million years ago. It predates the Tyrannosaurus rex by 10 million years.
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's, global head of science and popular culture dept.:

"This is a Gorgosaurus. It is a therapod, meaning two foot dinosaur from the Tyrannosaured family, which is the family that includes T. rex, Albertasaurus, etc.. It is or was native to Northwestern America."
5. Pan from the length of the tail of the Gorgosaurus to its head
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's, global head of science and popular culture dept.:
++SOUNDBITE COVERED BY VIDEO++
"It is just under 10-feet-tall, from snout to tail, about 23-feet-long, and somewhere between 66 and 77 million years old."
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's, global head of science and popular culture dept.:

"The different areas vary by percentage, anywhere from 30 to 40% original bone. There are crucial elements of the skull that are present and the occipital area, for example, which is the part that tells us that this is a Gorgosaurus versus, say, a juvenile T. rex or something."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's, global head of science and popular culture dept.:

"You could say, or paleontologists speculate, that Gorgosaurus was fiercer, actually roamed the earth for a longer time span, anywhere from 10 to 20 million years. We're not certain because there's no exact end and beginning date for for them."

"The pelvis is almost complete, 90 something percent. That was one piece that was dug up in one block. And if you actually look really closely at it, the area in between the pubis bones still has matrix in it. They didn't want to break that out. You know, you find the fossils and you basically glue them back together. It's like the biggest puzzle you've ever built."
16. Various, pubis bones of the Gorgosaurus

"You know, any dinosaur that you see is going to have some elements that are original bone and some elements that are cast off of another specimen. So those elements that are cast, you do not get those rights. The person who has the original bone has those rights. But for those original bone elements, you do have the casting rights."

ANNOTATION: The Gorgosaurus will highlight Sotheby's natural history auction on July 28. The presale estimate is $5 million to $8 million.
STORYLINE:
The fossilized skeleton of a T. rex relative that roamed the earth about 76 million years ago will be auctioned in New York this month, Sotheby's announced Tuesday.
