6 Must-Do Activities in Iceland

Iceland has been called the land of fire and ice because of its stark contrast between its cold, icy landscape and the hot steam coming from its active volcanoes. There are many incredible activities that you can do while you travel, such as whale watching in Iceland. If you’re planning to visit Iceland, make sure to check out these six must-do activities in Iceland before you go home so you can say you experienced everything it has to offer.

6 Must-Do Activities in Iceland

1) Hiking at Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is a great spot for those interested in geology, exploring waterfalls, and taking day hikes. There are a number of day hikes that can be done from Landmannalaugar, one of the most popular being hiking to Skogar with the Geysir area. This hike takes about six hours and is about 10 miles long as a round trip. It does get quite challenging at times but well worth it for some great views of the countryside, rugged hillsides, and snow capped mountains. The trail also takes you past other geothermal areas such as hot springs and mud pools. Those who are looking for an even more strenuous hike will enjoy the Kjolur route which has been called one of the best walks in Europe by National Geographic.

2) Swimming in Lake Myvatn

Lake Myvatn is a geothermal lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and while it can be murky and freezing cold, swimming here is an experience not to be missed. Your best bet is to take a swim right after sunrise at Solheimajokull, with the rocks in the foreground. Take note that Myvatn doesn't have sandy beaches, so you'll need to watch your step. Some parts of the shoreline are covered by algae, but if you wear shoes or flip flops, this shouldn't be too much of a problem. You might also want to bring some toilet paper for cleaning up afterward.

3) Horseback Riding on the beach

Horseback riding is a must when visiting this country and with the beautiful beaches of Reykjavik, it’s not hard to imagine why. Though a horseback ride on any beach is fun, the Icelandic coastline is what will be seared into your memory. The scenery alone during the 45 minute tour makes it one of the best attractions that Iceland has to offer. It also comes with an optional stop at a waterfall along the way. One downside of going for a horseback ride near Reykjavik is the long drive to get there; about an hour away from the city centre. However, there are horses available for rent closer to downtown if you would prefer something closer or want more time exploring other parts of the country before heading out.

4) Touring Reykjavik with a Local

Touring Reykjavik with a Local is the best way to experience the city. Tours are intimate and engaging, perfect for travellers who want to ask questions and learn about Icelandic culture and history. A tour will also introduce you to some of the must-see attractions in Reykjavik like Hallgrimskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall, University of Iceland, and the Secret Lagoon.

5) Soaking in The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is probably the most iconic place you can visit while in Iceland, and for good reason. The water at this geothermal spa feels like a warm bath and the minerals give your skin an ethereal glow. Plus, the views over Reykjavik as you soak are breathtaking. It's a bit of a tourist trap but it's so beautiful and peaceful that it's well worth it. Visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds or go during winter when it's open all day. You can also book a two-hour lagoon experience which includes drinks and food if you're looking for something more indulgent.

6) Visiting Gullfoss Falls

The Gullfoss waterfall is the second largest waterfall in Iceland and is composed of two falls, the Háifoss (High Falls) and the Lóndrangarfoss (Low Falls). Visitors can get close to both falls. The hike is an easy 3km walk. You will be surrounded by lush green vegetation, dark lava rocks, and rugged mossy trails. Visitors have said that the waterfall provides a great opportunity for photography and it's one of the most beautiful waterfalls they've seen.
