Alabama (US), July 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Indian pair of Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam combined to win a bronze medal in the compound mixed team archery event at the World Games 2022, here.
The Indian archery pair defeated Andrea Becerra and Miguel Becerra of Mexico 157-156 in the bronze medal play-off to bring home India's first medal in this edition.
Abhishek and Jyothi took a slender 40-39 lead at the end of the first set. However, Andrea, a world championships bronze medallist, and Miguel mounted a comeback to level the match 78-78 in the second set. The Indian duo once again raced ahead in the third set and struck four 10s in the final set to wrap up a narrow win on Saturday night.
"Compound Mixed duo - @archer_abhishek & @VJSurekha win (Bronze Medal) first ever medal in #TheWorldGames 2022 held at #Birmingham2022, USA from 07-09 July 2022," the Archery Association of India said in a tweet.
Earlier, Abhishek and Jyothihad had beaten New Zealand 156-155 in the quarterfinals but went down to the Colombian duo of Daniel Munoz and women's world No. 1 Sara Lopez 157-159.
This was also India's first-ever medal in archery at the World Games and fifth overall across all disciplines since the event's inception in 1981. India's previous medals came in snooker, powerlifting and badminton.
However, Asian Games gold medallist Verma's individual campaign was cut short without a medal. He lost to Canada's Christopher Perkins 145-148 in the bronze medal play-off.
The Indian archer, ranked world No. 5 in men's compound archery, had beaten world No. 1 and world champion Mike Schloesser of the USA in the quarters but faltered against world No. 4 Jean Philippe Boulch of France in the semifinal.
On the other hand, Jyothi, world No. 3 in women's compound archery, had lost to 2017 World Games silver medallist Toja Ellison of Slovenia 148-149 in the quarterfinals of the women's individual event.
