Gurugram: GMDA conducts drive against illegal water connection

Gurugram, July 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) A tam of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has disconnected the illegal water supply connection of a particular locality for drawing water illegally from GMDA's master pipeline, officials said here on Sunday.

This issue was first raised by IANS on June 17 when it was found that the Residents Welfare Association (RWA) of Gurugram's Sheetla Colony Phase-2 was allegedly extracting water illegally from the GMDA's master pipeline and was "disrupting the water supply" to Palam Vihar, Carterpuri and Dundahera through which the pipeline passes.

A GMDA team of a police officers from the concerned area reached the spot on Saturday evening and disconnected the illegal water connection.

It also came to the fore that residents of the locality have been illegally extracting water from the GMDA master pipeline for the past five years and disrupting the water supply to Palam Vihar, Carterpuri and Dundahera through which the pipeline passes.

The nearby shopkeepers had also alleged that the residents of the locality illegally extorted Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per water connection from them.

Abhinav Verma, GMDA Executive Engineer, said, "The department will soon conduct a drive against illegal water connections and stringent action will be initiated against the offenders to reduce the non-revenue water."

He informed that nearly 60 illegal water connections in recent years have been disconnected across Gurugram and several illegal connections have been identified in different areas of the district.

"The focus is now on disconnecting such illegal water connections," Verma added.

Earlier on June 18, when a GMDA team reached Sheetla Colony opposite of Gurugram's Sector-5 to disconnect the illegal water connections, they were allegedly manhandled by its residents and the team were forced to return without taking any action.

To avoid such incidents the GMDA had sought police protection for carrying out the water disconnection drive.
