Vivek Agnihotri was interacting with News Helpline during a press conference to promote The Kashmir Files and urge government of Maharashtra to deem the film tax-free in the state.
Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, The Kashmir Files, based on exodus of Kashmiri Pandits during surgency in 1990, has attracted a lot of heat from political parties, critics, and minority groups.
Talking about the film, Vivek said, “If I was to make a film on oppressed Muslims in Kashmir, I bet there will be funding, stars to work in it, promotion and marketing people lining up to help and money to be made, but the moment I made it on Kashmiri Pandits or Hindus, the whole went controversial and difficult. I want to tell stories of India, which people are scared to tell, I am not scared of no-one, and I will keep on telling untold stories”
Further adding, Vivek said that getting the information about the subject was difficult. He said, “There is a lot of material on Holocaust, when Jews were killed and made to leave their country, there is material on it and one could easily make a film, but in case of Kashmir, no one even bothered to write an FIR. There was no material, I even sent an RTI to the government, even that wasn’t helpful, so my dilemma was what to do now?”
“Finding people who were displaced was a mammoth task, finding material was next to impossible, when I started out with the project, I didn’t think of making a film, I was ready to shape it in any format it turned out, a series or documentary, I was even prepared to release the entire thing on YouTube, and worst-case scenario I was ready to publish my findings, a book” added Vivek.
Recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, lent unprecedented support to the film, which in turn made it reach audience.
Talking about the same, Vivek said, “Our Prime Minister is concerned about every Indian, Kashmiri, Solider, Army people, who lost their lives due to terrorism. Our PM believes in the slogan, entire world is my family, and I don’t think in our entire independence time, anyone has done more for humanity and human rights than our current Prime Minister”
Produced by Zee Studios, the film is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir Insurgency. It stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi.
