Men’s U19 World Cup: Covid-19 cases end Canada’s campaign

Dubai, Jan 28 (SocialNews.XYZ) Nine positive Covid-19 cases in the camp have put an end to Canada's Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2022 campaign, with the cancellation of their remaining two plate competition matches, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed on Friday.

Canada were due to play two matches this week, but they cannot now go ahead as the players will undertake a period of isolation.

"We were expecting to see some positive cases throughout the event and to date, these have been managed in accordance with our biosafety plan without impacting on fixtures. However with so many players from the Canadian team testing positive, it will not be possible to stage these games," said Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events in a statement.

"The players are now self-isolating and will receive full support from the event medical team under the guidance of the bio-safety advisory group," he added.

Canada's plate play-off semi-final against Scotland was scheduled on January 29. As a result of its cancellation, Scotland will progress to the 13th/14th play-off courtesy of their better net run rate. Places 11 to 16 are decided based on the Plate Championship results.

While both Scotland and Canada finished bottom of their respective groups, losing all three matches, Scotland's net run rate of -1.666 was better than that of Canada's -1.823. Canada's 15th/16th play-off against PNG or Uganda that was scheduled to be held on January 30 was also cancelled.

Scotland will now face the winner of the PNG and Uganda game for the 13th/14th play-off.
