The president of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Mr Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, today, in Port-Louis.

The CAA president is on a four-day visit to gauge the progress achieved in the on-going preparations for the forthcoming 22nd CAA African Senior Athletics Championships to be hosted by Mauritius from 08 to 12 June 2022.

Following the courtesy call, Minister Toussaint said that it was a pleasure to welcome the CAA president and his delegation to Mauritius, and that his visit would boost ongoing preparations in the context of the 22nd CAA African Senior Athletics Championships. He assured Mr Malboum that Mauritius stands ready to receive the different delegations and to hold the sporting event at the Côte D'Or National Sports Complex.

For his part, Mr Hamad Kalkaba Malboum underlined that the meeting confirmed the commitment of the Government of Mauritius as well as of the Minister and his team to support the organisation of the 22nd Championships. Recalling that the COVID-19 pandemic had limited sporting events in Africa, he highlighted the importance of the African Championships in enabling athletes from the continent to compete and better prepare themselves for the World Athletics Championships, scheduled in the United States of America in July 2022.

Moreover, the CAA president stressed the good track record of Mauritius in hosting several sporting events and expressed the hope that the best African athletes would be present in Mauritius in June 2022.

During his visit, Mr Hamad Kalkaba Malboum and his delegation will, among others, head to the Côte D'Or National Sports Complex where the competition will be taking place. He will also meet with the organising committee of the Championships, and have working sessions with various stakeholders.
