Neil was 52 years, he passed away at the Reliance Hospital in Mumbai after a brief illness.
Sharing a picture of Neil on her social media profile, actor turned politician Kiron Kher wrote, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the passing of Neil who was the mainstay of The @shillongchamberchoir. We became friends after they won India’s Got Talent season 2. Such a great talent gone too soon. May he RIP. You will be missed dear friend”
Actor and producer Farhan Akhtar tweeted, “Saddened to learn that Neil Nongkynrih is no longer with us. His passion for music and dedication to the Shillong Chamber Choir, which he founded, was inspiring. You will be missed sir. RIP. @Shillong_SCC”
Neil Nongkynrih was a concert pianist. He was the founder, mentor and conductor of Shillong Chamber Choir (SCC), which won the reality show India's Got Talent in 2010. He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India in 2015.
He was an alumni of London's prestigious Trinity College of Music and of Guildhall School of Music. In 2009, the Shillong Chamber Choir collaborated with the famed Vienna Orchestra for a series of concerts. The next year, the choir also won Gold awards at the World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China in three categories - Music Sacra, Gospel and Popular.
