Local authorities in Lakes State have committed to respecting and protecting the human rights of all citizens at the conclusion of a special roundtable event hosted by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan for Human Rights Day.
At least 60 key stakeholders took part in the event, including traditional, community and religious leaders, women and youth representatives, civil society, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organisations, state government officials and security forces.
Under the theme “Respect and Promote Equal Rights of all in Lakes State”, the participants discussed their individual and collective roles in promoting human rights.
Speaking at the event, UNMISS Head of the Rumbek Field Office, Kwame Dwamena Aboagye, called on local communities to promote equality, opportunity, dignity, and rights for all citizens in order to achieve a fairer and inclusive society.
‘’South Sudan is now a member of UN and of many international groupings. You have signed a lot of protocols and agreements, and all of them have reflections on the issue of the human rights,” he said.
“I am here with a message that your struggle is recognized and supported because of your goals. Now is your time to fight the abuses of the human rights and implement all the documents you have signed.’’
Hon. Malok Makoi Bol, the Chairperson of the Lakes State Human Rights Commission, appreciated UNMISS’ effort to bring stakeholders together and committed to working in close collaboration with the government to ensure wider protection for human rights in Lakes going forward.
That commitment was echoed by the Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Hon. Benjamin Makur Mabor.
‘’Violations have never been accepted. The government will not compromise in providing safety and security for the people. We are looking forward to sustainable peace in Lakes.’’
