Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial period drama based on a book, Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt in the lead role, will release in 2022.

'Gangubai Kathiawadi' will release in theatres on January 6, 2022. The drama is helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the project is based on the book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai' written by S Hussain Zaidi, and will showcase the rise of a girl named Gangubai Kothewali, a brothel owner and matriarch from Kathiawad who had no choice but to embrace the ways of destiny and swing it in her favour.
The film also stars Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles, Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi featured in a extended cameo appearance.
The narrative walks through the life of young Ganga who in no time marks her own territory and becomes Gangubai – a madame in the red light area of Kamathipura. The film is set to release in Hindi and dubbed Telugu language.
