Padma awards: Kapany, Balasubramaniam and Col Santosh awarded posthumously

The government announced to confer the second-highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan award posthumously to Narinder Singh Kapany.

Kapany was known as the” father of fibre optics”. He died at the age of 94 in the US in December 2020. He has more than 100 patents to his name and was the first to transmit images through fibre optics back in 1954.

Kapany is among the seven people named for the Padma Vibhashan awards this year. Sand artist Shri Sudarshan Saho (Odisha), Archaeologist Shrii B.B. Lal (Delhi), Spiritualist Maulana Wahiduddin Khan (Delhi), for medicine Dr Belle Monappa Hegde (Karnataka), for art Shri S.P. Balasubramaniam (Posthumous) (Tamil Nadu), and for Public Affairs Mr Shinzo Abe (Japan).

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, approved the conferment of 119 Padma awards on the occasion of 72nd Republic Day. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhshuan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102  Padma Shri Awards. Nearly 29 of the awardees are women, 10 people from Foreigners/ NRI/PIO/OCI, 16 Posthumous and 1 transgender awardee. The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, has been conferred with Padma Vibhshan, while the list contains the name of Ram Vilas Paswan in Padma Bhushan.

In the field of literature and education, for Padma Shri awards, the awards are conferred to Prakasarao Asavadi, Dharma Narayan Barma, Sujit Chattopadhyay and Srikant Datar.

In the field of Social Work, the government conferred Padma Shri to Tsultrim Chonior, Prakash Kaur, Niru Kumar, Shyam Sundar Paliwal, Birubala Rabha, Sindhutai Sapkal, Jitender Singh Shunty, Guru Maa Kamali Soren, Marachi Subburaman, Girish Prabhune, Shanti Devi, Lakshmi Baruah, aAngkhumi Bualchhuak and Chutni Devi.

The government, this Republic day will confer a posthumous Padma Bhushan to the former Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi died at the age of 86 on November 23, 2020. He was also a former central minister. Former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan is also awarded Padma Bhushan award posthumously. One of the tallest Dalit leaders from Bihar and founder of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) died on October 8, 2020, due to ill health.

Colonel B. Santosh Babu, who laid down his life fighting the Chinese troops in Ladakh is awarded Mahavir Chakra posthumously. He hailed from Suryapet district of Telangana.
