On Thursday, India recorded 13,823 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. The recorded number as on Wednesday was 10,064, the lowest recorded since June 6.
The overall tally, according to the Union Health Ministry, was 1,05,95,660, the lowest streak of single-day cases. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported 162 deaths in the past 24 hours making the total toll of 1,52,718. The Ministry reports that 70 per cent of these deaths occurred due to comorbidities.
Rajesh Bhushan, the Union Health Secretary, said that the five states are major contributors to the total active cases. These states are Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal.
Kerala tops the charts with 34.22 per cent of the total active infections currently, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal with 25.88, 4.30, 4.02 and 3.44 per cent respectively.
Nearly 1,02,45,741 have been reported to have recovered so far and there are currently 1,97,201 active cases of covid-19 in the country. The current recovery rate of the country stands at 97.70 per cent while the fatality rate is 1.44 per cent, as per Ministry’s data.
States like Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand has logged 73 per cent of the total daily deaths. Maharashtra has reported 50 cases, Kerala 26 cases, West Bengal 11 cases, Karnataka 9 cases, Delhi and Chandigarh 10 cases each of fatalities.
On the other hand, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka reported 72 per cent of the daily new cases of the coronavirus infection.
Gujarat, reported 485 new coronavirus cases, making it's tally a total of 2,56,852 and the death toll to a total of 4,396. Ahmedabad saw 103 new cases, Vadodra 95 cases, Surat 92 cases, Rajkot 65 cases, and Jamnagar 19 cases. Andhra reported, 179 new covid-19 cases, increasing the state’s tally to 8.86 lakhs. Around 231 patients have been reported to be recovered from the virus.
18,85,66,947 samples have been tested till January 19, with 7,64,120 samples being tested, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reports.
The country’s vaccination drive started on January 16, where two Covid vaccines are approved by the government. So far, 6.31 lakh beneficiaries have received doses of Covid-19 vaccines.
