Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in as president and vice president at an inauguration ceremony that is expected to be significantly downsized due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr. Biden will be sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor at the U.S. Capitol, just two weeks after a mob of pro-Trump supporters stormed the building during the electoral vote counting proceedings. Five people died following the attack on the Capitol, including a U.S. Capitol Police officer who sustained injuries at the riots, a woman who was fatally shot by police, and three people who suffered medical emergencies.
The inauguration ceremony is expected to start at 11 a.m. ET. Biden will deliver an inaugural address following the swearing-in ceremony.
At 78, Biden will become the oldest president sworn into office. Harris swearing-in marks several firsts: she will become the first female and Black vice president and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the office.
