AP police mount 'sea vigil' exercise to raise threat awareness

Amaravati, Jan 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district police are mounting a 'sea vigil' for two days - Tuesday and Wednesday - along the coastline to raise awareness on the possibility of threats emerging through the coast.

The district is executing this exercise as directed by the principal secretary, home department, on how to apprehend terrorists and other threats taking the sea route and prevent untoward incidents along the coast.

The exercise will also focus on important places near the coast such as coastal villages, bus stops, railway stations, government offices and others.

"As part of this, the sea vigil programme will be conducted for two days within the limits of Kottapatnam and Ramayapatnam marine police stations in Prakasam district," said an official.

The Navy, marine police and district police have set up 16 pickets, 37 landing points, 13 village beats, 15 check-posts, two mobile parties, 10 quick response teams and strict 'bandobust' with several policemen.

The exercise will also involve security personnel interrogating strangers and keeping a vigil on anti-social elements and terrorists.

Meanwhile, taking cognisance of the recent disinformation carried out by some journalists in the district over idols on a temple arch which suffered corrosion but were given an impression that some unscrupulous elements caused it, Superintendent of Police Siddhartha Kaushal issued a warning.

Kaushal advised people not to fall for rumors circulating on social media, reminding that the southern state has a stellar reputation for being an exemplarily secular place.

"We will act sternly against anybody trying to disrupt peace and order in the district," Kaushal told IANS.

The senior IPS officer recommended people to refer to - factcheck.ap.gov.in - to know the truth about incidents going viral on social media.

As a pre-emptive measure, he said 'bind over' cases were registered against 2,672 individuals, with more than 1,000 CCTV cameras in religious places in the district.
