The High Court said that though there is no definite time period fixed for the police to arrest an accused against whom an FIR has been lodged and arrest could be made by police at will, but irrational and indiscriminate arrests are a gross violation of human rights. "The courts have repeatedly held that arrest should be the last option for the police and it should be restricted to those exceptional cases where arresting the accused is imperative or his custodial interrogation is required," a Bench of Justice Siddharth Verma observed. The High Court was hearing an anticipatory bail application in relation to a case registered under Sections 452, 323, 504, 506 of IPC.
