Honduran int'l airport reopens after back-to-back hurricanes

Teguchigalpa, Dec 31 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport in northern Honduras resumed operations in the wake of back-to-back hurricanes Iota and Eta in November, a top official said here.

In a statement on Wednesday, Leo Castellon, president of the Superintendence of Public-Private Partnerships, said that two daily flights, one run by American Airlines and the other by United Airlines, are expected to operate normally, Xinhua news agency.

Intense work to clear the airport of mud and debris, and rebuild parts affected by the storms, has been completed last week after almost a month.

More than 2.3 million travellers fly via the Honduran airports each year.

The two Category 4 hurricanes made landfall in Central America on November 3 and November 17, respectively.

Eta caused damage across nearly all of Honduras' 18 departments and claimed the lives of 74 people.

Meanwhile Iota, killed 16 people.
