Anand L. Rai to direct film based on the life of former Indian world chess champion Viswanathan Anand

Filmmaker-producer Anand L. Rai is all set to make a film based on life of former Indian world chess champion Viswanathan Anand. The official announcement of the film hasn’t been made as yet but it as per the reports, it will be jointly produced by Anand L. Rai’s production house Colour Yellow Productions and Mahaveer Jain’s production house Sundial Entertainment.

 Revealing the news about the film, film trade analyst tweeted, “BIOPIC ON VISWANATHAN ANAND... A biopic on #Indian chess grandmaster #ViswanathanAnand has been planned... The biopic - not titled yet - will be directed by Aanand L Rai... Produced by Sundial Entertainment [Mahaveer Jain] and Colour Yellow Productions [Aanand L Rai].”

 

As of now, no decision has been made on who will play the role of 51-year-old chess grandmaster. A number of biopic has been made chronicling the life of several sportspersons in the past.

Some of the prominent names include Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Mohammed Azharuddin, Milkha Singh and Mary Kom. The sporting journeys of Saina Nehwal, Abhinav Bindra and P.V. Sindhu are also being made into movies.

Viswanathan Anand became the first grandmaster from India in 1988, and is one of the few players to have surpassed an Elo rating of 2800, a feat he first achieved in 2006.

Anand is a five-time world chess champion. He defeated Alexei Shirov in a six-game match to win the 2000 FIDE World Chess Championship, a title he held until 2002. He later became the undisputed World Champion in 2007, and successfully defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008, Veselin Topalov in 2010, and Boris Gelfand in 2012. In 2013, he lost the title to challenger Magnus Carlsen, and lost a rematch to Carlsen in 2014 after winning the 2014 Candidates Tournament.

Earlier, Rai has made notable films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Raanjhanaa’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu: Returns’ in his career.

Currently, he is directing a romantic drama film named ‘Atrangi Re’ which features Akshay Kumar, Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan in leading roles.

Apart from that, Rai’s is also producing a mystery thriller film ‘Haseen Dillruba’ and a romantic comedy film ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan’ under the banner of Colour Yellow Productions.
