Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the new building of Parliament on Thursday. The ceremony was attended by Union home minister Amit Shah, defence minister Rajnath Singh, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, foreign envoys and Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla. The ceremony was followed by a sarva dharma prarthana (multi-faith prayer). The Prime Minister delivered his address at 2:15 pm.
The PM said that differences in a democracy were normal but any type of disconnect was not and that democracy in India has always been about sorting out differences and contradictions. The PM also said that despite differences in policies and political ideologies, the ultimate goal should be to serve people.
The Prime Minister praised Indias spirit of democracy, saying that it has been sacred and a way of life in the country that has been developed based on centuries of experience. He said that other countries discuss elections and other administrative issues when speaking about democracy and that a day would soon come when out countries will say India is mother of democracy.
