PIL filed in Calcutta HC seeks deferment of Durga Puja

Kolkata, Oct 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday seeking deferment of the Durga Puja festival organised by various clubs and organisations across West Bengal.

The PIL was filed by Ajay Kumar Dey, a resident of Howrah district, in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. It states that there has been a steep rise in the number of coronavirus cases in Kerala after the Onam festival in the recent past.

The situation would be similar if Durga Puja is celebrated in the state. Ganesh Puja and Muharram were also not allowed in Maharashtra this year keeping in mind the possibilities of a spike in Covid-19 cases, the PIL said.

The matter is likely to be heard before the division bench of Sanjib Bandopadhyay on Thursday, sources said.
