Ex-Mexico boss Herrera extends club America contract

Mexico City, June 16 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former Mexico national team manager Miguel Herrera has reached a deal to remain head coach of America until 2024, the Liga MX club has said.

Herrera has led America to three titles - the 2018 Apertura, 2019 Clausura Copa MX and 2019 Champion of Champions trophies - since taking charge of the club for the second time in 2017, reports Xinhua news agency.

"An agreement has been reached with Miguel Herrera and his coaching staff to expand their relationship with the team for the next four years," America said in a statement on Monday.

"We have every confidence in his work, and we desire that he remains for many years," club president Santiago Banos added in the statement.

Herrera, 52, is a controversial figure in Mexico, renowned for his animated goal celebrations and spiky relationship with the media. In 2015, he was sacked as Mexico's head coach after allegedly punching a TV reporter.

America were fourth in the 18-team standings when the Liga MX Clausura tournament was cancelled in May because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Liga MX officials announced last week that the Apertura tournament would begin on July 24, with matches to be played without fans until further notice.
