In a major announcement, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has now removed the Rs 4500 cap on the test and has now passed on the power to decide the cost of the test to the states. The move essentially means that the cost of 19 test which used to be Rs 4500, will be brought down considerably.

As per a communication between ICMR and other States, the ICMR has suggested that given the new firms which are now producing the testing kits, there is aggressive competition in the open market, leading to reduced rates at which the testing kits are being sold.

The ICMR in its letter further said that since the supply of testing kits has already stabalised, the states can now procure the test kits at a mutually agreeable price from private labs.
