Superstar Akshay Kumar along with many noted sports personalities such as PT Usha, Gautam Gambhir, Saina Nehwal mourn the death of legendary hockey player Balbir Singh.
Balbir Singh Dosanjh or Balbir Singh Sr, as he was popularly known as in the sporting community, passed away this morning. A legend in field hockey, Balbir Singh’s contribution to field hockey, especially for independent India, was unparalleled. He was a giant in his sport and the most decorated athlete in Indian sports history with Olympic medals in 1948, 1952 and 1956 Summer Games.
Actor Akshay Kumar wrote, “Saddened to hear about the demise of hockey legend #BalbirSingh ji. Have had the good fortune of meeting him in the past, such an amazing personality! My heartfelt condolences to his family”
Indian sprinter P.T. USHA shared, “Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Balbir Singh Sr ji. An athlete par excellence and a role model beyond words! His bestowed hands may strengthen my passions more. My condolences to his family, friends and fans! #balbirsingh #Balbirhockey”
Cricketer turned politician Gautam Gambhir wrote, “Pained to hear about the demise of Hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr ji! Three time Olympic gold medalist, he brought great laurels to the country! You will always remain in our hearts Sir! #BalbirSingh”
Badminton champ Saina Nehwal wrote, “Inspiration to many and great sportsperson...we will miss our three time Olympic gold medal winner. May the soul of #BalbirSingh sir rest in peace”
His achievements go beyond the three Olympic medals because just his impact in field hockey, just like Dhyan Chand, was something that cannot be measured in mere words.
