Bengal Guv questions KMC notification, says he’s not aware

Kolkata, May 7 (SocialNews.XYZ) West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday called upon State Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha in regard to the issuance of a notification to appoint a 14-member board of administrators for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

"The notification issued on Wednesday about Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is yet to be made available. From every consideration this should have been sent to Raj Bhawan without delay. This notification is widely in circulation in media," Dhankhar tweeted.

The Governor said that the chief Secretary had been called upon to urgently forward the notification as also the entire decision making process, including the authority that has taken the decision.

"Appreciating sentiments of people ignoring a lot - surely can't compromise on Constitution. Priority (should) be given to its constitutional repercussions impacting bodies subject to Part IX (A) of Constitution," he said.

The Governor further tweeted that the order was issued in his name but he was not aware of it. "Order in my name (but) I am not aware. No consultation or information. Where are we headinga Time for change-act as per law for the sake of people," Dhankar said, further adding that defiance to central directives is unfortunate.

The Mamata Banerjee-led state government on Wednesday issued an order to appoint the board of administrators to run the day-to-day work of the state's largest civic body Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The decision to appoint the new board of administrators came into play in the wake the nationwide Covid-19 pandemic. The municipal elections in various urban local bodies (ULBs) of West Bengal, including that of KMC, were scheduled to be held in April-May this year but postponed for an indefinite period owing to the on-going shutdown.

The new board is slated to take over its charge from May 8. The new board will be led by ex-mayor Firhad Hakim himself while ex-deputy mayor and other members of the mayor in council (MMIC) will also be there to run the necessary civic operations.
