8 Dead after gas leak at chemical plant in Visakhapatnam – TV9 (Video)

 

A hazardous toxic gas leak from Vishakha LG Polymers Company. Early estimates are nearly 2000 people have fallen sick, several people have died, the poisonous gas spread to nearly 3 km, people in 5 surrounding villages have been affected.

As per early reports, 8 people died and 20 people are in a critical state. Most of them are elderly and children. Two people died after they fell into a well because the poisonous gas severely affected their eyesight; another person is said to have died of suffocation.

Quite a few animals too have died due to this gas leak. Major rescue operations are underway. People are suffering from burning sensation and breathing problems due to the gas leak.

Government of Andhra Pradesh advised to nearest people of L.G Polymers PVT Ltd company Vizag to vacate the place and move to a safe place.

According to an official, there was 2,000 metric tons of chemical in the tank where from vapor leaked. Another tank has 3,000 MT chemicals. Fortunately, there was no spark when it leaked, he says

Exposure to larger amounts can result in the onset of "styrene sickness" which can include headaches, nausea, vomiting, weakness, tiredness, dizziness, confusion & unsteady motion.
