Sanaa, April 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, shared with the Yemeni government and Houthis revised proposals for agreements on a nationwide ceasefire, on measures to alleviate the suffering of the people, and on the resumption of the political process.
"The proposed agreements are balanced and reflect the core interests of all sides to the greatest extent possible. These proposals represent a realistic and comprehensive package to enable Yemen to break from the violence and suffering of the past and take a historic step toward peace," Xinhua news agency quoted Griffiths as saying on Friday.
"I urge the parties to accept these proposed agreements without delay and begin working together through a formal political process to comprehensively end the war. The international community stands ready to provide support and assurances to the process."
He stressed that Friday's announcement of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Yemen makes it even more imperative to stop the fighting immediately.
He further expressed gratitude to all the Yemenis who publicly demanded peace in recent weeks.
"I hope the parties will heed these demands and demonstrate the leadership Yemen needs at this critical time."
Griffiths has been trying to broker a major deal after both the Yemeni government and Houthi forces indicated in late March their interest in Guterres' appeal for a global ceasefire in the context of COVID-19.
The Saudi-led military coalition's announcement on Wednesday for a two-week unilateral ceasefire in Yemen has significantly boosted Griffiths' chances.
The Saudi-led coalition is defending the internationally recognized Yemeni government against Houthi rebels allegedly supported by Iran.
