Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday called for a “common exit strategy” between the central government, states and union territories to ensure the entire population doesn’t come out at once.
Modi’s proposal was seen as a hint that the 21-day lockdown in place since 25 March might not be extended.
“Social distancing will be more imperative once the lockdown period ends,” said a state government official who attended the meeting. “And it will be the states that will have to ensure that people don’t come out in droves once the lockdown ends. It can’t be business as usual. That is why the PM wants the states to give their suggestion on an exit strategy.”
