Panaji, March 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Covid-19 pandemic may cost the tourism industry in Goa, a leading beach and night-life tourism destination, around Rs 1,000 crore and 70,000 jobs, according to the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, here on Thursday.
"The COVID-19 virus will cost the state tourism industry approximately Rs 1,000 crore in loss. This will result in severe job losses to about 60,000-70,000 people unless remedial measures are taken," it said.
The Association, however, said it would support a total lockdown of the state's borders to minimise the impact of the pandemic. "Should the government think it's best to lock down borders, by shutting the inter-state borders and airports temporarily, we will support the government in this decision after giving guests in the state adequate time to leave," it said.
The Association comprises hoteliers, travel agents and others related with the sector.
Citing poor testing facilities, it recommended "social distancing" and "self-imposed lockdown" to mitigate the potential damage.
However, not a single positive coronavirus case has been detected in the state yet.
"In this event, essential services, including food supplies, should be maintained and emergency cases be allowed to travel," it said and urged cancellation of all events, marriages and other functions up to April 15.
It has also called for cancellation of the March 22 Zilla Panchayat polls as a precautionary measure.
