India’s response to Covid-19 of containment — isolating carriers of infection from abroad at the entry point and tracing contacts of those who tested positive and isolating them — would appear to have limited the number of positive cases to 107. Is that an accurate number or merely the result of inadequate testing? After all, only when a test is carried out can a patient suffering flu-like symptoms be determined to be a victim of Covid-19 or some other pathogen. However, given global trends, containment may not be enough, and the focus must shift to mitigation.
As a first step, India needs to aggressively expand testing for Covid-19.
Since the WHO declared the Covid-19 outbreak, India has tested 6,700 samples, put 35,000 under community surveillance and 12,76,040 passengers arriving from 16 Covid-19-critical countries have been screened at airports.
