Minecraft Gaming Gets Massive Popularity in 2020

History

Markus Persson is a Swedish game developer and, in 2008, he began to develop a new type of game. He was aiming for a game like Dwarf Fortress or Infiniminer but he wanted to add role-playing abilities to the game; thus, the concept of Minecraft was born.

He released the first version of his game in May 2009 and took the time to analyze the gameplay and look at the reviews from game players. As a result, he released an update to the game and then, in June 2010, he released a brand new version of the game, naming it the Alpha” version. From then on, the game spiked in success and Persson began releasing regular updates, bringing new features, changing the modes and the blocks. In November 2011, the full version of the game was released, with Daniel Rosenfield responsible for the score, and became a success overnight.

Evolution

In 2013, a PlayStation version of the game was released, and 4J Studios were involved in the development of both the Xbox and PlayStation versions.

In 2014, Persson opted to sell full ownership of both Minecraft and the Mojang name. He sold it for $2.5 billion to Microsoft, who went on to release several platform versions of the game, including Linux, Windows, and macOS. They also released several different versions, including Minecraft 4K, Minecraft Education, and Minecraft Classic.

In the same year as Person sold to Microsoft, the game became the flagship for Xbox Arcade NEXT, bringing with it a lot of new features, including in-game tutorials for the Xbox, and a multiplayer screen.

In 2011 the first mobile version of the game was released, called Minecraft PE but it would be 2016 before the full PE game was released for Windows 10 Phone, iOS, and Android. And in 2015 and 2016 respectively, two spin-offs were released – Minecraft Story Mode and Minecraft Education.

Awards and Achievements

Minecraft has been the recipient of several awards over the last decade:

  • 2010 – three awards - Game of the Year by PC Gamer UK, Indie of the Year by Indie DB, and Shotgun Game of the Year
  • 2011 – four more awards - Best Debut Game, Innovation Award and Best Downloadable Game by Game Developers Choice Awards, Grand Prize and Community Voted Audience Award by the Independent Games Festival. You can get it from https://ac-market.org
  • 2012 – a further two awards – TIGA Game Industry Award and the Golden Joystick Award
  • 2014 – TIGA Game of the Year
  • 2015 – Minecraft was voted the most addictive game of the year at the Kids Choice Awards

By the time 2014 dawned, Minecraft had sold over 140 million copies, putting in second place in the best-selling-games of all time. By the end of last year, 180 million copies of the game had been sold and over 110 million people play the game every month.

Earnings and Net Worth

By April 2011, 800,000 copies of the Alpha version of Minecraft were sold, bringing in revenue of around $33 million. By 2015, Microsoft was reporting game revenues in the region of $63 million and, as of the time of writing, the game is estimated to be worth over $1.7 billion.

Over the decade since Minecraft was first released, Minecraft has steadily grown, from the desk of a developer who wanted something different to the multi-million selling game it is today. The game graphics have changed little, remaining the simple blocky fun it started out as but, despite that, Minecraft is more popular than many of todays greatest games. With a simple survive or die game premise, Minecraft is set to continue outselling the biggest games of today, and its net worth will only continue to grow for the foreseeable future – a real success story if ever there was one.
